<description><![CDATA[Similar fate might await anyone who frequents a love hotel that fails to meet basic safety standards]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last week, the <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/category/love-hotel/">love hotel</a> Prince in Fukuyama City caught fire. Of 12 customers on the premises, seven died due to carbon monoxide inhalation.</p>
<p>The hotel, a combination of wood and steel-reinforced concrete, was constructed back in the 1960s. But <em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/nikkan-gendai/">Nikkan Gendai</a></em> (May 16) warns readers that a similar fate might await anyone who frequents a <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/category/love-hotel/">love hotel</a> that fails to meet basic safety standards.</p>
<p>The fire is believed to have started in the area of the hotel&#8217;s front desk and office, possibly due to a short circuit of the electrical devices in use. But the tabloid reveals that despite the standard practice that calls for twice-yearly inspections, Hotel Prince had last undergone an inspection by the local fire department in September 2003, i.e., nine years had gone by since its last safety check.</p>
<p>The negligence was attributed to the lack of officials available to perform safety checks.</p>
<p>Records of the previous check in 2003, moreover, showed that inspectors had pointed out to the hotel&#8217;s operator that the building did not comply with standards for fire safety equipment. Nor is there evidence that the operator made any improvements. In other words, the Prince was an accident waiting to happen.</p>
<p>&#8220;The first thing to look for is the safety of the fire escape stairway,&#8221; says Takamasa Wada, a fire rescue worker who provides advise regarding disaster risk management. &#8220;If objects are piled up on the stairway landings, people won&#8217;t be able to flee. That was the situation in that building in Shinjuku&#8217;s Kabukicho in 2001, when 44 customers died.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wada adds that it&#8217;s always safer when the fire escape is attached to the outside of the building. He also advises people who utilize such facilities take rooms on the 1st or 2nd floors.</p>
<p>&#8220;In a worst-case scenario, if you jump out the window there&#8217;s less chance of a major injury,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>One factor compounding the Hotel Prince tragedy was the hotel&#8217;s location on a back street with few pedestrians. By the time a passing taxi spotted smoke and flames shooting from the building and called for assistance it was too late. So it&#8217;s also important to pick a love hotel that is not too isolated from the view of passers-by.</p>
<p>&#8220;Look for places with emergency ladders in the rooms, a map on the wall indicating what to do in the case of fire, and at least two emergency exits,&#8221; Wada also advises.</p>
<p>A final word: If you happen to be in one of these hotels when a fire breaks out, don&#8217;t count of help from a sprinkler system.</p>
<p>&#8220;In this country, there&#8217;s not one love hotel equipped with a sprinkler system,&#8221; asserts an unnamed source in the fire department. (K.S.)</p>

		<description><![CDATA['Say, won't you buy me? I'll do it for 5,000 yen']]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ten years have passed since the deregulation of the taxi industry in Japan. And now the general consensus is that there are too many cars on the road, and not enough customers for them.</p>
<p>&#8220;You should see the cars line up on the streets around <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/kabukicho/">Kabukicho</a>, around the time the bars start closing, with nary a passenger in sight&#8221; a reporter from the desk of a local newspaper tells <em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/shukan-taishu/">Shukan Taishu</a></em> (Apr. 9).</p>
<p>Since drivers seem to have more time on their hands, there&#8217;s a story making the rounds that an attractive young woman has been coming on to them.</p>
<p>Her technique is to board the car and once settled into the back seat, show a lot of leg and proposition the driver.</p>
<p>One driver, while waiting in a queue, saw the woman get out of the car in front of him, who refused to carry the woman.</p>
<p>He then relates, &#8220;She got in my car and said to me, &#8216;Say, won&#8217;t you buy me? I&#8217;ll do it for 5,000 yen.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;So hell yes, I was surprised,&#8221; one driver tells the magazine. &#8220;Usually I&#8217;m used to hearing customers ask for discounts for long-distance fares.</p>
<p>&#8220;Naturally I&#8217;d be interested, but I was at work, and I sensed it might lead to trouble. I told her no, and asked her to get out of the car.&#8221;</p>
<p>The driver said he knew the driver in the queue who&#8217;d refused to carry up the woman. &#8220;Afterwards he told me she&#8217;d asked him for 10,000 yen,&#8221; he chuckles. &#8220;She must have been getting desperate, and offered it to me for half price.&#8221;</p>
<p>This technique, of catering to cabbies, seems to be a new form of streetwalking that&#8217;s been catching on around the city.</p>
<p>Another driver said he was propositioned by a woman who appeared to be in her 50s while waiting in a queue at a certain station on Tokyo&#8217;s Yamanote Line.</p>
<p>&#8220;At stations around drinking areas, it&#8217;s become pretty common after the trains stop running,&#8221; says a veteran cabbie. &#8220;Not long ago, two of them in my car said to me, &#8216;How about buying our panties? We&#8217;ll take them off for you right on the spot.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>After scouring the city, the reporter finally finds a driver willing to relay his account of scoring with an lady who&#8217;s described as a dead ringer for popular actress Erika Toda.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was about 2:00 a.m. on a February night,&#8221; recalls the 54-year-old cabbie, a divorcee. &#8220;I was cruising on a main drag lined with lots of famous boutiques, and she flagged me down. As soon as she got in the car she began making a sales pitch.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It struck me as being strange,&#8221; the driver continues. I suppose it was unlikely she was a pro &#8212; probably an OL. Naturally at first I refused, but she said she&#8217;d do it for 5,000 yen. &#8216;C&#8217;mon, I&#8217;ve been standing out in the cold. Can&#8217;t you give a girl a break?&#8217; she pleaded.&#8221;</p>
<p>Since he couldn&#8217;t very well pull his car into a hotel, the driver went looking for a suitable spot on a lonely back street.</p>
<p>She climbed in front and helped the driver remove his trousers and shorts, and promptly went down on him.</p>
<p>&#8220;She was really skilled,&#8221; the driver said, rolling his eyes. &#8220;After sucking me with her soft inner lips, she took me as far as I could go.&#8221;</p>
<p>The with speed and technique that comes only from experience, she removed her panties, cranked the driver&#8217;s seat to the horizontal position and the two were soon making the beast with two backs.</p>
<p>Afterwards the driver was somewhat unnerved to see the woman looking at his name plate.</p>
<p>&#8220;It displays the driver&#8217;s name and company name,&#8221; says Yukio Murakami, an authority on the sex industry. &#8220;So if he gets rough with her, or refuses to pay, she would be able to track him down and make trouble. When you think about it, there&#8217;s no safer John for girls in the business than a taxi driver.&#8221;</p>

<description><![CDATA[Taipei authorities have released Taiwanese-Japanese actress and singer Makiyo on $1,000 bail (NT$30,000) and barred her from leaving the island for her involvement in a dispute last week that seriously injured a taxi cab driver]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>TOKYO (TR) &#8211; Taipei authorities have released Taiwanese-Japanese actress and singer Makiyo on $1,000 bail (NT$30,000) and barred her from leaving the island for her involvement in a dispute last week that seriously injured a taxi cab driver, the <em>Taipei Times</em> reported.</p>
<p>Makiyo, suspected of being drunk at the time, was a passenger in the car with two other Taiwanese actresses and a male companion from Japan when the altercation started, according to the paper. The male friend, identified as Takateru Tomoyori, was arrested Friday for allegedly attacking the driver who remains in intensive care with two fractured ribs and a concussion, the <em>Times</em> said. <span id="more-31856"></span></p>
<p>Makiyo is suspected to have kicked the taxi during the altercation and could be charged with damage to personal property and aggravated assault, the <em>Times</em> said. The two other actresses, A-tzu and Hsiang-ying, were questioned after the incident and released without bail.</p>
<p>Local reports say the altercation started when the taxi driver asked the four to wear their seatbelts and they refused. At a press conference, Makiyo said her male companion came to her defense after the taxi cab driver tried to fondle her when she was paying the cab fare; the man’s family denies the charge and passersby who witnessed the fight said the taxi driver never tried to defend himself, according to the <em>Times</em>.</p>

He&#8217;s got the looks of a model picked by magazine readers, is diligent at learning the job, and is just the type of guy that a studious gal like me wants to take under her wing &#8212; so to speak.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus begins an alluring amorous adventure from the pages of the November issue of <em>Renai Tengoku</em> (Love Heaven), as introduced on the pages of <em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/shukan-bunshun/">Shukan Bunshun</a></em> (Feb. 2).</p>
<p>&#8220;A few days ago our staff went out drinking and I got really loaded,&#8221; she continues. &#8220;He chivalrously offered to see me home in a taxi. I thought I&#8217;d let him take me as far as the door, but all of a sudden he pulled me inside and began kissing me. It was like what had been a cute young subordinate had suddenly been transformed into a ferocious wolf. <span id="more-31761"></span></p>
<p>&#8220;After he used a finger to confirm that I was aroused, I suddenly felt a hot object gradually going inside me. And the ferocity of his thrusts belied his innocent looks. As I trembled with pleasure he moved me to the bed, for repeated marathon sex sessions that continued until morning.</p>
<p>&#8220;The following Monday at the office, at the office some people were saying, accusatorily, &#8216;I wonder if you seduced your subordinate,&#8217; but I denied it vociferously. After all, it was not me who did the seducing!&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Bunshun&#8217;s</em> pseudonymous byline, &#8220;Aitsu wa, aitsu wa, mara-ii toshishita no otoko no ko,&#8221; is coined from The Candies&#8217; 1975 pop hit, Toshishita no Otokonoko (Younger Boy), whose lyrics go, &#8220;That guy, that guy is a loveable younger boy.&#8221; Here the <em>kawaii</em> in &#8220;kawaii toshishita no otoko no ko&#8221; is punned to read <em>mara ii toshishita no otoko no ko</em>, meaning a younger guy with a good co*k. (W.W.)</p>

<description><![CDATA[A taxi driver from Chiba Prefecture and a 15-year-old girl have been arrested for violating child welfare statutes after prostituting a group of six high school girls, reports Nikkan Sports (Nov. 3).]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>TOKYO (TR) &#8211; A taxi driver from Chiba Prefecture and a 15-year-old girl have been arrested for violating child welfare statutes after prostituting a group of six high school girls, reports <em><a href="http://www.nikkansports.com/general/news/p-gn-tp0-20111103-858360.html">Nikkan Sports</a></em> (Nov. 3). <span id="more-29517"></span></p>
<p>Yoshinori Kawai, 30, and a third-year high school girl, also from Chiba, were taken into custody by Chiba prefectural police for arranging sexual encounters between six high school girls, aged between 14 and 17, and customers recruited through <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/2011/06/09/thanks-for-the-mammaries-terekura-turns-25/">telephone club dating services</a>.</p>
<p>According to police, Kawai allegedly used his private car to deliver the girls while off duty to local hotels to meet customers. He also escorted them home. </p>
<p>The 15-year-old girl was the ringleader, going by the title &#8220;company president,&#8221; and the girls were known collectively as the &#8220;<em>enko</em> group,&#8221; or literally &#8220;group of prostitutes.&#8221; The teen suspect brokered the deals with customers for the group members.</p>
<p>The scheme unraveled over the summer. In June, Kawai is alleged to have introduced a 14-year-old girl to a 37-year-old customer at a Funabashi <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/love-hotel/">love hotel</a>. One evening the next month, Kawai and the girl were questioned by police officers while driving in his private car. After meeting with another customer soon after, the girl felt a sense of guilt and went to police authorities to reveal the arrangement. </p>
<p>The high school girls allegedly told customers that they were 19 years old and charged 20,000 yen for one hour of sexual services. Kawai and the 15-year-old suspect took between 8,000 and 10,000 yen as a commission. </p>
<p>The two suspects became acquainted at an outdoor party a few years ago. The relationship between the pair was strictly a &#8220;business partnership,&#8221; according to the article. </p>

<description><![CDATA[On Nov. 19, Chiba police arrested 75-year-old Morimitsu Iha on the charge of groping a 46-year-old woman aboard the JR Sobu Line.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a title="Nikkan Gendai Nov. 23" rel="attachment wp-att-23903" href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/?attachment_id=23903"><img src="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/nikkan_gendai_nov23.jpg" alt="Nikkan Gendai Nov. 23" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="355" height="253" /></a>On Nov. 19, Chiba police arrested 75-year-old Morimitsu Iha on the charge of groping a 46-year-old woman aboard the JR Sobu Line.</p>
<p>&#8220;Energetic,&#8221; was the word that <em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/nikkan-gendai/">Nikkan Gendai</a></em> (Nov. 23) uses to describe the suspect.</p>
<p>&#8220;Iha was wearing a dark suit, possibly to make it easier to flee,&#8221; a police source confides to the tabloid. &#8220;The victim had been holding a strap. He had moved behind her and begun rubbing his groin against her buttocks.&#8221; <span id="more-23903"></span></p>
<p>The source then adds, &#8220;According to several eyewitnesses, &#8216;He&#8217;d got a splendid woody for a man of that age.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>Last summer police had received reports of a similar offender on the same commuter line, and Iha is being grilled over possible prior offenses.</p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/nikkan-gendai/">Nikkan Gendai</a></em> notes that crude crimes by coarse codgers have been increasing of late. In September, a 71-year-old Tokyo man was caught pink-handed attempting to pilfer women&#8217;s underwear; a police search of his house came up with a total of 7,000 items. The following month, another 71-year old man was apprehended while in the act of stealing a woman&#8217;s under things from a veranda clothesline. And a 64-year-old taxi driver was arrested after he fondled the genitals of his passenger, a cabaret <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/hostess/">hostess</a> who had drunkenly dozed off on the back seat.</p>
<p>Numerous incidents of stalking involving seniors have also been reported. Last September, a 72-year-old Hiroshima man was detained for hounding a woman of the same age, and earlier this month an 82-year-old Kumamoto man was nabbed for lurking in ambush outside the home of a salesgirl in her 20s to whom he had the hots.</p>
<p>&#8220;A lot of these old guys are unable to get over their Lolita complex,&#8221; remarks a crime reporter. &#8220;Last September a 60-year-old man was arrested in Ibaraki on suspicion of violating the law banning child prostitution. He&#8217;d handed 1,000 yen to a junior high school girl and asked her to perform a lascivious act. He was a horny old goat, who was in the habit of accosting young females who walked past his house.</p>
<p>The pattern of violations suggests a shift in crime trends in the world&#8217;s most rapidly aging society. </p>
<p>&#8220;I guess we can expect more incidents by lecherous old men in the future,&#8221; the reporter predicts. (K.S.)</p>

<description><![CDATA[An estimated 200 prostitutes openly work out of snack clubs]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In No. Seven of 10 tidbits termed &#8220;the truth behind the rumors of the sex business,&#8221; <em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/2010/01/30/japans-cunning-bottakuri-bars-con-compliant-customers/">Spa!</a></em> (Oct. 5) takes a slow boat to a rural island where something fishy is definitely going on. The weekly tabloid calls it &#8220;Island W,&#8221; notes it is about 7 kilometers in diameter, and adds it is situated within the confines of a national park. The island is accessed by a small ferry, at a one-way fare of 150 yen.</p>
<p>Its main attraction are an estimated 200 prostitutes who openly work out of snack clubs.</p>
<p>&#8220;To get there, you take a train about two hours from a certain big city, and then it&#8217;s about 20 minutes by taxi from the station to the boat landing,&#8221; says a local taxi driver. &#8220;Japanese women are working on the island, but they&#8217;re not so young&#8230;These days, most of the women are Thai.&#8221;</p>
<p>The ferry sails all of 400 meters from the mainland. Upon disembarking at the wharf, a middle-aged woman meeting the boat asks the reporter, &#8220;Hey sonny, have you decided where you&#8217;ll be staying?&#8221;</p>
<p>The woman explains the two choices. A 60-minute romp costs 20,000 yen. Those desiring an all-nighter can procure the services of a lady for the hours of 11:00 p.m. to 7 a.m, for an outlay of 40,000 yen.</p>
<p><em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/2010/05/23/tokyo-furikome-fraudsters-go-from-princes-to-paupers/">Spa&#8217;s</a></em> reporter allowed the procuress to guide him to a snack club where he encountered two Japanese women in their late 30s and six Thai females in their 20s. Unimpressed with the merchandise, he dismissed the procuress with a wave and set off to explore the offerings on his own.</p>
<p>At a second shop, he found three working girls, including one, a Thai-Japanese hybrid with a pixyish face, and two Thais.</p>
<p>Curious to know if it was true what they say about Pixie, he propositioned her, only to be told that she had already been booked for the overnight shift.</p>
<p>&#8220;But she&#8217;s available right now for a quickie!&#8221; he was urged by the proprietor.</p>
<p>It turned out that the shop&#8217;s other two girls were also booked until morning. Apparently the only way to ensure overnight company is to make arrangements with a procuress immediately upon arrival.</p>
<p>His options limited, the reporter settled on an hour-long romp with a 25-year-old Thai woman, who escorted him from the snack to a small apartment just behind the snack club.</p>
<p>&#8220;She gave off a spicy musk,&#8221; he writes. &#8220;She told me she&#8217;d previously worked at a farm-related job in the Kanto area, but was dissatisfied with the low wages and fled to the island. </p>
<p>&#8220;Her tale of woe took all the lust out of me, and I wound up checking into a nearby inn. I decided to spend the night alone.&#8221; (K.S.)</p>

<description><![CDATA[Venerable studio brings back popular porn series]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>TOKYO (TR) &#8211; The promotional flyer says it all: &#8220;This is not a remake &#8212; it&#8217;s a return!&#8221;</p>
<p>Four decades ago, struggling studio Nikkatsu shifted its focus from action and <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/2008/05/12/fest-nix-yak-pix/">gangster films</a> to a form of soft pornography termed &#8220;roman porno&#8221; (an amalgamation of romance and pornography), a breakthrough genre for a major studio that was characterized by relatively substantial storylines blended with copious nude scenes.</p>
<p>&#8220;Danchizuma: Hirusagari no Joji&#8221; (Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair), released in 1971, detailed the erotic extramarital activities of a married woman residing in one of Japan’s infamously bland suburban block-housing units.</p>
<p>&#8220;At that time society regarded it as a dirty film,&#8221; said the female lead, Kazuko Shirakawa, 62, at a speaking engagement at theater <a href="http://www.eurospace.co.jp/">Eurospace</a> in Tokyo’s Shibuya district in February. &#8220;It was not ordinary for a woman to be seen naked. The overall content was a bit shocking.&#8221; <span id="more-15878"></span></p>
<p>Yet the general public applauded and the studio had a hit on its hands, with Shirakawa on her way to reaching certifiable &#8220;queen&#8221; status. &#8220;Apartment Wife&#8221; went on to generate 20 sequels, and by the end of the genre’s run 17 years later roman porno features numbered 1,133.</p>
<p>Nikkatsu, Japan&#8217;s longest-running studio, is now making a comeback with totally new takes on roman porno classics under the moniker &#8220;Roman Porno Returns&#8221; &#8212; a revitalization of this cultural icon that launched the careers of numerous members within the conventional film industry. </p>
<p><div id="attachment_16745" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 222px"><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/danchi_1971.jpg" rel="lightbox[15878]"><img src="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/danchi_1971-212x300.jpg" alt="Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair (1971) © Nikkatsu" title="Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair (1971) © Nikkatsu" width="212" height="300" class="size-medium wp-image-16745" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair (1971)</p></div>The reworked versions of both &#8220;Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair&#8221; and &#8220;Ushiro kara Mae kara&#8221; (From the Back, From the Front), the original of which dates to 1980, screened for two weeks at <a href="http://www.eurospace.co.jp/">Eurospace</a> this month and in February. The pair is now playing in Sapporo and will move to Osaka and Fukuoka next month. Satellite provider Sky PerfecTV! currently offers &#8220;From the Back, From the Front&#8221; on a pay-per-view basis.</p>
<p>&#8220;At first I was shocked about the revival because these films represented my youth,&#8221; said Shirakawa. &#8220;But after realizing that one of the original directors was involved I had total confidence. I really like the revival version, even though on the surface it seems like nothing special. After watching it I felt a special melancholy and passion.&#8221;</p>
<p>That director is 58-year-old Shun Nakahara, who helmed the 75-minute reincarnation of &#8220;Apartment Wife,&#8221; the story of Sayaka (Sakiko Takao), a lonely housewife, and her encounters with a water-purifier salesman (Masaki Miura).</p>
<p>Shirakawa, who appears in a cameo role, feels that the revival gently conveys the simple life of this plain housewife, a woman who &#8220;has something inside her uterus that is screaming to get out.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The director beautifully describes this feeling welling inside her through symbolism,&#8221; she said, &#8220;such as with the scenes showing running tap water and boiling pasta noodles.&#8221; </p>
<p>Nikkatsu sees the films as opportunities for new film talent. Over the last few years, a peek at Japan&#8217;s year-end top-ten box office lists will <a href="<a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/2010/02/16/tv-steers-japanese-cinema/"> find films produced by television networks, heavily staffed with their own production crews, topping the charts</a>, a trend that many in the industry believe is shutting out new directors. &#8220;It is hard for young talent to make a debut,&#8221; said Yoshinori Chiba, a producer of the new films. &#8220;We are hoping that the &#8216;Returns&#8217; series will bring opportunities to young directors to break through this closed environment.&#8221;</p>
<p>The rebirth of &#8220;From the Back, From the Front&#8221; is a rather nasty comedy directed by fresh face Shoichiro Masumoto and finds sultry and shapely taxi driver Momoko (Tomomi Miyauchi, a former model and member of the Miniskirt Police pop group) offering passengers far more than a simple ride when they get in her back seat.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_16746" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/danchi_2010.jpg" rel="lightbox[15878]"><img src="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/danchi_2010-300x199.jpg" alt="Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair (2010) © Roman Porno Returns Film Partners" title="Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair (2010) © Roman Porno Returns Film Partners" width="300" height="199" class="size-medium wp-image-16746" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair (2010)</p></div>Shirakawa&#8217;s roots in the trade go back to the 1960s, when she was performing in <em>pinku eiga</em>, or pink films, a similar form that still exists today and utilized a selection of tiny, independently run companies to produce quick-and-dirty erotic productions. </p>
<p>With little in the way of a support staff, Shirakawa said that a pink actress was relegated to doing such menial tasks as fixing her own hair or purchasing a kimono at a pawn shop to fit a particular role. &#8220;I really learned how to read the script because there was nobody there to assist me,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I became a self-made person.&#8221; </p>
<p>By contrast, Nikkatsu’s roman porno films were able to offer larger budgets and, as a result, a better look and image quality. The films, which usually ran for around 60 minutes, also had access to the studio’s chain of theaters for screenings.</p>
<p>Shirakawa was subsequently poached by Nikkatsu, a move that she felt was a step up. &#8220;When I was in pink films, I had to hide my job and could not make aspects of it public,&#8221; she said. &#8220;On the cover of the scripts I had to write something like &#8216;Fuji TV&#8217; to conceal the contents. However, at Nikkatsu I felt as if I were in Hollywood.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nakahara, who fondly recalls seeing Shirakawa perform passion-charged, &#8220;uncensored&#8221; roles in stage plays at various theaters in Tokyo&#8217;s Shimbashi, Shibuya and Shinjuku districts, said that he was initially reluctant to join Nikkatsu because the studio had &#8220;stolen&#8221; his favorite pink actress, whom he also frequently caught on pink screens when he was a student. &#8220;But once I saw a roman porno film I got an impression of a new wave of American cinema,&#8221; said the director, who made his debut in 1982 with &#8220;Okasare Shigan&#8221; (Candidate for Seduction).</p>
<p><div id="attachment_17541" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 310px"><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/nakahara.jpg" rel="lightbox[15878]"><img src="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/nakahara-300x196.jpg" alt="Shun Nakahara at Eurospace in Shibuya" title="Shun Nakahara at Eurospace in Shibuya" width="300" height="196" class="size-medium wp-image-17541" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Shun Nakahara at Eurospace in Shibuya</p></div>At the time of the roman porno incarnation, Nikkatsu was on the verge of bankruptcy as the emergence of television threatened the entire film industry. In Japan&#8217;s &#8220;Golden Era&#8221; of cinema in the &#8217;50s and &#8217;60s the number of screens had ballooned to over 7,000, but by 1970 only 3,000 were in operation.“The roman porno direction was taken to rebuild the company,” said Nikkatsu&#8217;s Chiba. </p>
<p>Yet unlike Shirakawa&#8217;s recollection that &#8220;Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair&#8221; was shocking for its content, major studios in Japan had previously dabbled in smutty offerings. Along with Toei, which in the 1960s experimented with various torture and erotic-grotesque films, Nikkatsu had released its share of non-puritanical fare, such as director Seijun Suzuki&#8217;s &#8220;Nikutai no Mon&#8221; (Gate of Flesh) from 1964. </p>
<p>Similar to the stated intention of the &#8216;Returns&#8217; versions, the roman porno originals provided a testing ground for young talent to develop their craft &#8212; that is, as long as the requisite skin-scene-every-ten-minutes quota was met. &#8220;It had the image of something new, something different,&#8221; said Nakahara. &#8220;All of the directors were competing to come up with something different. If one director did one thing, another would try something else.&#8221;</p>
<p>The styles went far beyond the &#8220;Apartment Wife&#8221; series and ranged from hardcore SM themes, such as 1974&#8242;s &#8220;Hana to Hebi&#8221; (Flower and Snake), featuring sadomasochistic starlet Naomi Tani, to truly romantic stories, like the very soft &#8220;Love Letter&#8221; (1981), which was billed as being appropriate even for ladies to view. </p>
<p><div id="attachment_16738" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 222px"><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/ad.jpg" rel="lightbox[15878]"><img src="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/ad-212x300.jpg" alt="Roman Porno Returns ad © Roman Porno Returns Film Partners" title="Roman Porno Returns ad © Roman Porno Returns Film Partners" width="212" height="300" class="size-medium wp-image-16738" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Roman Porno Returns ad</p></div>The &#8220;<a href="http://www.roman-returns.com/">Roman Porno Returns</a>&#8221; Web page indicates that students were always looking forward to seeing the standard release of two new movies every other week, and the competition between directors (mentioned by Nakahara) resulted in quality productions. </p>
<p>As shown by the lead character in the &#8220;Apartment Wife&#8221; films, the output was largely intended to be genuinely emotion-filled &#8212; a contrast to typical snuff flicks that primarily focused on naked bodies and pounding flesh. &#8220;Assessments of the works considered them to be regular film pieces,&#8221; said Yoshinori.</p>
<p>&#8220;Roman porno was not trying to simply show sex. It also wanted to bring adult themes out into the open,&#8221; said Jasper Sharp, author of the book &#8220;Behind the Pink Curtain&#8221; (2008), a look at the history of sex in Japanese cinema.</p>
<p>Critical acclaim was not unusual. For 1972, film trade magazine <em>Kinema Junpo</em> ranked &#8220;Ichijo Sayuri: Nureta Yokujo&#8221; (Ichijo’s Wet Lust) eighth in its annual top-ten list and included it in 1999 as one of the top-100 Japanese films of the century. That film&#8217;s female lead, Hiroko Hisayama, was given Best Actress that year by that same publication for her role as a rookie stripper.</p>
<p>The high profile of roman porno also stirred up controversy. One of the most scandalous of the films was the original &#8220;From the Back, From the Front,&#8221; starring singer Yoko Hatakenaka, a one-time idol whose musical debut &#8220;Love Letter from Canada&#8221; propelled her to a spot in public broadcaster NHK&#8217;s year-end &#8220;Red and White Song Contest&#8221; in 1978. A song titled &#8220;From the Back, From the Front&#8221; was released two years later, around the same time as her roman porno debut in &#8220;Ai no Hakujitsumu&#8221; (Daydream Love), a controversial transition that propelled that single and subsequently the film, released in December, to hit levels.</p>
<p>Roman porno finally died out in the &#8217;80s, largely due to the emergence of adult video, whereby fans were able to get their fill of erotica at home. Nikkatsu hit upon tough times again in 1993, when it filed for structural reorganization. The studio, originally founded in 1912, has since been bought and sold by various firms and is now jointly owned by SKY PerfecTV! and the Nippon Television Network. In true Nikkatsu fashion of never staying sedentary, the studio last year launched a special imprint specializing in gore films, Sushi Typhoon, which producer Chiba is heading.</p>
<p><div id="attachment_16743" class="wp-caption alignleft" style="width: 224px"><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/back_1980.jpg" rel="lightbox[15878]"><img src="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/back_1980-214x300.jpg" alt="From the Back, From the Front (1980) © Nikkatsu" title="From the Back, From the Front (1980) © Nikkatsu" width="214" height="300" class="size-medium wp-image-16743" /></a><p class="wp-caption-text">From the Back, From the Front (1980)</p></div>As far as a legacy, critics believe that the original roman porno works built the foundation for much of today’s Japanese cinema. &#8220;Time Escapade: 5 Seconds Before Climax&#8221; (1986) is included in the resume of director Yojiro Takita, who won a best foreign-language Oscar in 2009 for &#8220;Okuribito&#8221; (Departures). Nakahara went on to make the critically acclaimed mainstream feature &#8220;Sakura no Sono&#8221; (Cherry Blossom Garden), a 1990 adaptation of a manga set in a high school written by Akimi Yoshida that has been remade into theatrical productions.</p>
<p>The originals are not entirely dead. Film festivals around the world, especially in France, routinely slot the productions into their lineups. Further, revival theaters in Tokyo often have screenings. <a href="http://www.cinemavera.com/">Cinema Vera</a> in Shibuya is now featuring numerous works by directors such as the acclaimed Noburo Tanaka, including 1977’s SM-themed &#8220;Hakkinbon Bijin Ranbu Yori: Semeru!&#8221; (Beauty&#8217;s Exotic Dance &#8211; Torture!) &#8212; the third in a trilogy and starring roman porno&#8217;s second queen, Junko Miyashita.</p>
<p>At present, Nikkatsu does not have plans to continue the revival series. But the positive response from film-goers &#8212; many of whom have been female &#8212; has been overwhelming. The studio is currently contemplating further releases. </p>
<p>&#8220;Perhaps people are fed up with the information on sex that is chaotically floating around the world,&#8221; said Nikkatsu&#8217;s Chiba about the renewed interest. &#8220;We hope that &#8216;Returns&#8217; will establish itself as a new genre that will assimilate itself into the present era.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Note: Both &#8220;Apartment Wife: Afternoon Affair&#8221; and &#8220;From the Back, From the Front&#8221; will screen at <a href="http://movie.walkerplus.com/th532/">Marion Cinema</a> in Sapporo until Apr. 2 and move on to <a href="http://www.cinelibre.jp/umeda/">Osaka</a> and <a href="http://www.cinelibre.jp/hakata/">Fukuoka</a> later that month.</em></p>

<p>&#8220;It was around 10 p.m., and I was on my way home from a date with my boyfriend. As we passed near the corner of a public park, we heard a woman&#8217;s voice exclaim, &#8216;Help me!&#8217; and we immediately rushed in to render assistance.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8216;Hey! What&#8217;re you doing?&#8217; my boyfriend shouted at the male attacker, who immediately dashed off. His intended victim told us she didn&#8217;t want to report her assailant to the police, so we helped her flag down a taxi and sent her home.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anyway there we were in the park by ourselves, still feeling the tension from this unexpected incident. And while it was dreadful to see that poor, terrified woman, on the other hand the excitement definitely piqued our erogenous zones, so to speak. So on an impulse, we acted out the roles of a fleeing female and male molester. Forcing my face against the park grass, my boyfriend had his way with me. <span id="more-15789"></span></p>
<p>&#8220;And ever since then, we&#8217;ve become enthusiastic fans of outdoor sex!&#8221;</p>
<p>The writer&#8217;s byline is given as &#8220;Kincho to Kanwa&#8221; (緊張と緩和), originally meaning tightening and relaxing, but here with the <em>kanwa</em> changed to read 姦和, which conveys the meaning of &#8220;illicit sex together.&#8221; (M.S.)</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a title="Nikkan Gendai Jan. 28" rel="attachment wp-att-15322" href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/?attachment_id=15322"><img src="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/nikkan_gendai_jan28.gif" alt="Nikkan Gendai Jan. 28" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="355" height="258" /></a>&#8220;I was really surprised. When I went in to clean up, the room was a bloody mess,&#8221; relates the <em>meeku-san</em> &#8212; as chambermaids at <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/love-hotel/">love hotels</a> are referred to in the trade.</p>
<p>The reason for the speaker&#8217;s astonishment is evident in her ensuing remarks.</p>
<p>&#8220;I could tell it wasn&#8217;t just some woman having her period,&#8221; she says. &#8220;The bed sheets were covered with bloodstains that had soaked through all the way to the mattress cover. There were bloody tracks in the bath too.&#8221; <span id="more-15322"></span></p>
<p>The writer is the pseudonymous Shoko Harano, a 36-year-old divorced mother of two, who spent three years at the reception of a <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/love-hotel/">love hotel</a> before spilling her memoirs in <em><a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/tag/nikkan-gendai/">Nikkan Gendai</a></em> (Jan. 28).</p>
<p>It seems that the room&#8217;s occupants, a man in his 50s and a woman who appeared to be in her mid-30s, had arrived by taxi and requested Harano to summon a taxi upon their departure as well.</p>
<p>According to Harano, the woman paid for the room upon leaving, and did not appear to be injured.</p>
<p>The maid supposes the blood might have been from wrist cuts during an <a href="http://www.tokyoreporter.com/2009/06/07/bdsm-performance-in-shibuya/">SM session</a>.</p>
<p>Certainly, writes Harano, there&#8217;s a lot of flaky stuff going on in hotel rooms. Possibly worse than blood are scatological fetishists, who stink up the room something awful.</p>
<p>&#8220;Since last summer, we&#8217;d had three incidents where the rooms were left smeared with feces. It was all over the place, on the bed, on the walls, in the bath.&#8221;</p>
<p>To get eliminate the odure, the rooms had to be completely renovated. And the poor maid who happened upon the scene fled the hotel without even collecting her pay, so aghast was she at the sight of the turdfest.</p>
<p>Once while cleaning up, a maid at Harano&#8217;s hotel overheard the swish of a whip and its impact on flesh, followed by male moans of pain.</p>
<p>This particular maid was an old hand, and once had even seen a customer leading a naked woman, crawling on all fours, down the hotel corridor on a leash.</p>
<p>(&#8220;Looking at her from the rear, you could see everything!&#8221; she remarked.)</p>
<p>With admirable sang-froid, the maid then politely requested the couple return to their room for any further frolicking, and they obliged. But not before the man challenged her, saying &#8220;Hey, we weren&#8217;t hurting anybody, so what&#8217;s the problem?&#8221; (K.S.)</p>
